I’m Dr. Praveen and I’m a practicing GP and cancer lead for the whole of the Merseyside and Cheshire area. This involves raising awareness of cancer symptoms and also encouraging early detection of cancers; the more cancer cases we spot early, the more lives we can save.
My role falls within the Merseyside & Cheshire Cancer Network,
it’s a great initiative which links together all the organisations that provide care for people with cancer across Merseyside and Cheshire. A big part of my job involves working with patients and carers to make sure they’re cared for in the best way possible.
I grew up in New Delhi, the capital of India, a far cry from the streets of Merseyside and Cheshire. I had a love of Biology from a young age and was always keen to help people less fortunate than myself, so that led me to my first job as a junior doctor in a remote village in India.
My work then led me to the UK where I became a junior doctor in a larger hospital before progressing in to my current role. One of the proudest moments in my career has to be my son following in my footsteps and earning a place at Leeds Medical School.
In my free time I love to take myself off and play golf, I also have a huge passion for travelling the world which has led to an interest in cooking lots of interesting dishes I find along the way.
If I had to pick another profession, I’d be an architect so I could design unusual skyscrapers!
I really hope Action on Cancer helps spread the word and saves lives; cancer doesn’t need to be daunting, there are so many services in place to guide patients and their carers through the journey, as we recognise cancer also takes its toll on loved ones.
